Reunited Black Sabbath to headline Download 2012

Black Sabbath reunion press conferenceBlack Sabbath are set to headline next summer's Download Festival on June 10.

The original line-up of the band - Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Bill Ward and Geezer Butler - announced their plans to reunite for new material and a world tour next year at the Whisky A Go Go in Los Angeles this morning (November 11).

They were joined by Rick Rubin, who is set to produce the band's new album, the first to come from the original line up since 1978's 'Never Say Die!'. "It was the obvious choice," explained Osbourne of Rubin as producer. "I've known Rick for many years."

"It was time," said Osbourne of their reunion. "The timing was right." Tony Iommi added: "It's now or never for us... We're getting on great."

Osbourne went on to reveal that they've written "seven or eight" new songs for the album, which they plan to release in autumn 2012 after their Download show and before heading out on a world tour.

Butler added that the new songs are "back to the old Sabbath style and sound. The stuff that Tony's been playing is absolutely brilliant."

Rubin was present at the Henry Rollins hosted event and said: "We've been working on developing material and we're halfway into the writing process. It's inspiring hearing what's coming out."

The Birmingham band played their first Los Angeles show at the Whisky A Go Go 41 years ago today.

Black Sabbath have sold over 70 million albums across the world. They released the live album 'Reunion' in 1998, which featured two new songs. Their current work with Rubin however will make for their first new album in 33 years.

Black Sabbath join Metallica as headliners of next year's Download Festival, which will take place from June 8-10 2012 at Donington Park, with tickets going on sale a week today (November 18).
