INTERVIEW: Port Erin

Formed in the West Country in January 2007, Port Erin are a band who have gone from strength to strength. They have extensively toured the U.K, including two shows at Glastonbury Festival in 2010 and 2011, live sessions for BBC Introducing, and support slots with acts such as Red Snapper, Kill It Kid and The Redwalls. Read a review of a gig the band played a few months ago HERE.

Their 2nd album (title yet to be confirmed) was recorded with Marco Migliari in The Wood Room at Real World Studios, and will be released on October 5th 2012. Frontman Reuben Tyghe kindly took some time out from his busy schedule to tell us a bit more about the new album...

How long after the release of your first album did it take to start working on the new songs?
"Pretty much straight away. We took time out to not worry so much about crafting songs and just record lengthy jams, have some fun!"

Recording a second album is usually a different experience for most artists. How has the process been different for you this time round?
"Having Marco's objective view on the songs/overall project has been a back-bone to the record, he's helped shape and form our sound into a more cohesive listening experience. We spent a lot of time pre-producing the tracks - Working out grooves, looking at arrangements. Really knowing the songs inside out meant when it came to tracking it all we were prepared."

Musically what makes the new album different from the first one?
"I like to think the first record displayed our musical palette, there's a right old mish mash of stuff on there. This album we've tried to pick the right tracks to make a smoother, more direct record. Getting to the point, rather than twiddling off to no-where kind of thing.

What was it like making the album at Real World studios?
"Great! The Wood Room has such a vibe. Marco has pushed us and made us come together more as a unit (ahhhh)!"

Is there anything in particular that has influenced this new album?
"Grooves and honesty."

What do you hope to achieve with the new record?
"We've sold 3000 units of previous releases. To top that would be great. And a Maida Vale BBC 6 session would be really really nice..."

If you had to pick a personal highlight from the new album what would it be?
"Track wise it has to be Let It Go (The Walls) - We had so much fun creating that one."

So far what have been the highlights of being in Port Erin?
"Glastonbury 2010 and 2011, some of the recent shows and getting played on BBC 6 Music..."
