SONG FOR TODAY: Daft Punk - Da Funk

OK just in case anyone's a bit confused why today's, tomorrow's AND Wednesday's 'Song For Today' have already appeared on the blog, don't worry you haven't been caught up in some sort of weird time warp. I am going to be away in Plymouth for a few days to finally see the mighty Blur, and make my lifelong dream come true.

OK... here is a song I used to play excessively during my time as a very young club DJ back in the 90's. Made even more appealing by its memorable Spike Jonze-directed video featuring a talking dog, this classic from French visionaries Daft Punk became a huge hit and introduced the mainstream to the brilliance of Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo. The debut album 'Homework' is also a fantastic listen, very highly recommended and certainly one of the finest dance records there is...

"A few years ago Bangalter reveal that 'Da Funk' was made after listening to Westcoast G-Funk for weeks. "It was around the time Warren G's "Regulate" was released and we wanted to make some sort of gangsta-rap and tried to murk our sounds as much as possible. However no one has ever compared it to hip-hop. We've heard that the drums sounds like Queen and The Clash, the melody is reminiscent of Giorgio Moroder, and the synthesizers sound like electro and thousand of other comparisons. No one agree with us that it sounds like hip-hop".

In September 2010 Pitchfork Media included the song at number 18 on their Top 200 Tracks of the 90s.
