REWIND: Mansun - 'Taxloss'

An entire month featuring nothing but Britpop songs as 'Rewind' selections! Of course I was very strict with myself and ONLY included bands who were actually Britpop groups. For me, Mansun were something far beyond the genre. Quite possibly THE ultimate post-Britpop band in fact. Despite the fact that they split up over a decade ago, there is a Mansun fans convention taking place this summer in the band's hometown of Chester. Advance tickets for the Mansun Convention are available now at a cost of £13. They are selling fast, so do hurry!

"The Mansun Convention will take place on Saturday August 23rd 2014 and will celebrate the legacy of Mansun, once hailed as the most thrilling rock band in the country, whose number one debut album 'Attack of the Grey Lantern' was followed by the innovative 'Six', and who still have an incredibly dedicated fan base despite the band's split over ten years ago. The event will be held in the band’s hometown of Chester, at The Live Rooms; the city’s newest and largest independent live music and club venue. We’re proud to announce that the convention will feature the exclusive premiere of Paul Draper’s first ever solo track, and many items of personal band memorabilia are being donated by members of Mansun which will be used as competition prizes and to raise money for charity. There will also be live music by unmissable tribute bands and unique artists, special guest appearances and Q&A sessions with a variety of speakers from the Mansun family, competitions, rare memorabilia and instruments on show, guest DJs, screenings of exclusive footage and loads more!"

Here's one of my all-time favourite songs, a number 15 hit in April 1997. A Wikipedia entry explains the song's legendary video. That same month, director Roman Coppola filmed the music video using hidden cameras to capture members of the production crew throwing £25,000 in £5 notes (each with a white sticker with the word "Taxlo$$" in red) from the upper concourse of Liverpool Street Station onto commuters below. All this information is imparted in the finished music video which includes all the preparation for the stunt from the withdrawal of the cash through to the news reports after the event. The ensuing chaos as the crowd scrambled for the cash was intended to highlight human greed..." I wanted to feature the full length version of this absolute belter, but feel that this video MUST be seen! Fuck it, I'm featuring both.
