REWIND: Blur - 'Music Is My Radar'

Since Monday, I have been featuring a string of songs from the year 2000 as this week's 'Rewind' picks. Today's is one from a group of legends who have now been part of my life for 20 years, and who only released two new tracks in 2000, one of them being the soulful B side 'Black Book'. I am talking about the mighty Blur, who recorded the superb 'Music Is My Radar' for their 'Best Of' collection, and issued it as a single on October 16 2000. It reached number 10 in the UK charts. Originally the band had began recording 'Black Book' as the planned single, but were so pleased with how 'Music Is My Radar' developed that they made it the A side instead. Personally I think this song is the one that sees the four piece at their most sharpest musically. The rhythm section of Alex James and Dave Rowntree do things here that are beyond their usual level, and Graham Coxon puts in a terrific performance. Interestingly, the lyric referencing Afrobeat legend Tony Allen led to Damon Albarn meeting up with Allen and becoming friends. They began working on a project together, which a few years later developed and became The Good, The Bad And The Queen'. And on a topical nature, Tony Allen's new album 'Film Of Life' is coming out this month, and features a great track called 'Go Back' where Damon provides the vocals. That song featured as Track Of The Day a few weeks ago HERE.
